Product: MIFARE Terminal for loyalty system

Introduction

This project is example of bringing our client’s vision to life, clearly demonstrates our skill set in terms of product design and manufacturing, as well as our approach to clients.

Our client described its needs for a special terminal for loyalty system. This terminal they want to implement in gambling machines in Casinos.

Their requirements for this terminal were:

  • as small to fit on limited space on front panel between gambling buttons
  • accepts MIFARE RFID card in slot position
  • includes full viewing full color display with touch screen
  • uses local SD card storage
  • provides Ethernet connectivity
  • provides CAN bus connectivity
  • enables remote firmware update

Following the project analysis, we estimated the development costs of such a device and entered into a partnership agreement for this project. Upon the project’s completion, we have reserved the right to distribute the terminals of this kind to third parties.

We designed the mechanical chassis, the schematics of the CPU board, the schematics of the display board and the MIFARE RFID reader. You can view the completed concept design for the terminal in the images below:

Further development

After the firs prototype we continue to develop hardware platform including pre EMC testing, fine tuning of RFID MIFARE module anAfter the first initial prototype, we continued to develop the hardware platform. The process included EMC pre-compliance testing, fine-tuning the MIFARE RFID module and the reader’s antenna to achieve optimal performance. In parallel with the hardware development, we developed the software bootloader and remote firmware update procedures, as well as the firmware itself. The firmware was based on an RTOS (real-time operating system) and supported connectivity to the cloud-based loyalty management system. The technical details of the finalised product were:

  • ARM Cortex M7 core, 2MB Programm memory size, 532KB internal RAM, 8MB SDRAM

  • remote firmware upgrade via Ethernet
  • upgrade firmware via uSD memory card 
  • DC power supply 6-24V

Implementation

The MIFARE terminal is used for the purpose of the loyalty management system for casino users. The belowe pictures demonstrate the implementation of the terminal on gambling machines. This type of terminal could be implemented on various machines which are intended for simple interaction with the end consumer via a touch screen, messages on the screen and MIFARE RFID cards. Moreover, it is possible to adapt this hardware design to the individual needs of other projects.
